A nosebleed is scary, but most of the time it is not serious. The most important thing is to know what to do at that moment.
Common causes:
- Environmental dryness or excessive heating
- Blowing the nose hard or picking the nose
- Minor blows
- High blood pressure
- Use of nasal sprays or anticoagulants
What to do if your nose bleeds:
- Tilt your head forward, not backward (to avoid swallowing blood).
- You can use a cotton ball with undiluted hydrogen peroxide to plug the bleeding nostril.
- You can gently blow your nose beforehand to expel blood clots.
- Press the soft part of each side of the nose for at least 10-15 minutes.
- If possible, apply something cold on the nasal bridge, forehead, or nape.
See a doctor if…:
- The bleeding does not stop in 20-30 minutes
- It happens repeatedly without a clear cause
- You take anticoagulant medication
- You have other symptoms such as dizziness or weakness
